When an individual first experiences back pain, they often assume they will be a candidate for some type of back surgery. They might even be somewhat eager to undergo a surgical procedure. After all, spending a few days in the hospital, followed by several weeks or more of recovery -- it sounds simple enough if the surgery and recovery relieves all the painful symptoms, right?

Although the success rates for surgical outcomes of various types of back surgeries are improving, most surgeons are understandably cautious about determining which patients are good candidates for back surgery. Virtually every area of the spine involves a complicated network of nerves, other messaging components and other processes vital to a healthy, functioning body. Spinal surgery is not without serious risks. Some individuals are diagnosed with an additional condition after their back surgery, called "Failed Back Surgery Syndrome" or FBSS, meaning not only did the surgery fail to relieve their pain, it actually increased it.

In most instances, it certainly makes sense to try conservative, noninvasive treatments for back pain issues. In fact, most qualified physicians and surgeons will suggest noninvasive treatments first -- only suggesting surgery if all other avenues of treatment have been exhausted. In many cases, they will suggest pain medication and/or a series of physical therapy treatments for their patients. While physical therapy is often helpful, pain medication only mask symptoms and does not even begin to address the root causes of any pain.

Chiropractic care offers a complete system of noninvasive treatment for back pain. Chiropractors do recognize the value and importance of teaching their patients stretching and strengthening exercises, similar to what is found in physical therapy treatments. Along with these exercises, they can recommend changes to help better support your spine. Improving posture and modifying your sitting habits are two such examples. Most importantly, a chiropractor can gently manipulate the spine through a series of precise movements, in order to relieve pressure from misalignments found in the spine. In many cases, patients are able to find pain relief for their back pain without further reliance on medication and they don't feel the need to consider surgery ever again.
