Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a disorder characterized by long-term constant fatigue and often is accompanied with muscle pain, headache, lack of concentration, memory loss, joint pain, enlarged lymph nodes in the armpit, and recurring sore throat. Feelings of anger, guilt, and anxiety, are common in patients with CFS. The illness has a pattern of remission and relapse, and last for at least 4 to 6 months, but usually much longer. CFS interferes with work, sleep and daily activities. The sufferer is usually not helped by increasing the number of hours of sleep. Often the sufferer remains completely exhausted more than 24 hours after physical activity. CFS is more common in women between the ages of 40 and 60 years old, though anyone can be affected. More men are experiencing the symptoms of CFS over the last decade.

Currently, there is no known cause. No diagnostic test for CFS exists and less than 20% of sufferers are thought to have been diagnosed.

Treatment options:

  • Eliminate caffeine, nicotine and alcohol.
  • Do not nap during the day, and set a sleep schedule.
  • Pace yourself during activities.
  • Acupuncture may be of help.
  • Massage relieves muscle and joint pain.
  • Detoxification: Flushing the body of toxins using oral supplements, or chelation therapy will often improve symptoms.
  • Dietary modification: Decrease fats and sugars. Consider eliminating potential food allergies from grain products. Eliminate processed foods, preservatives, and fast foods. Learn to cook healthier meals. Fresh fruits and vegetables should be emphasized.
  • Chiropractic Adjustments: Manipulation of the spinal column, both neck and back, and manipulation of the shoulder and hip joints is helpful.
