Most of us have joked at one time or another about our grandmothers purse. It seems she is always ready for being in the audience of Let's Make a Deal.

Or maybe you have placed an iron in your pocketbook so you can use it as a lethal weapon should someone creep up on you at the grocery store.

These examples are over-exaggerated to make a lighthearted point about an issue that is truly no laughing matter.

We know that purses are both a fashion statement and our way of being prepared for whatever might come our way. But before you pack in the gear, stop and consider the needs of your shoulder, neck and spine.

We are such creatures of habit that we tend to carry our bag on the same shoulder. A heavy purse, carried consistently on the same shoulder, will begin to cause chronic neck and shoulder pain. Headaches and back pain follow. The natural curve of the neck has the purpose of distributing pressure evenly to the spine. Over time, this curve can become distorted and the result is pain.

What comes after the pain? Ligament strains and poor posture, but in extreme cases the words no one wants to hear - herniated discs.

What's a gal to do?

These discomforts and injuries are avoidable. Take a look at a few easy fixes:

Change bags often. When you switch purses, you tend to clean out and toss out the unnecessary.

Put together a "car-bag." This is a handy backpack containing things you might need while out and about but are not needed in the grocery store.

If you really must carry a heavy bag, don't put it on your shoulder. Carry it down at your side and switch arms often.

We know your stuff is important to you, but try to lighten up!
