Here at Lexington Family Chiropractic, we believe that the more you know about how your body works, the better you will be able to take care of it. Let's take a couple of minutes and talk about your remarkable shoulder.

When it is working right, the shoulder might seem like such a simple thing. However, let one little thing in this highly complex structure get stretched or torn or pulled out of alignment, and you'll find out it isn't as simple as it appears.

This shoulder joint, like the hip, is a ball and socket joint. The shoulder joint has a much greater range of motion than the hip, and that is where the complexity of the shoulder comes into play.

In the hip, the ball of the joint is the proximal (near) end of the femur (thigh bone) and the socket is a cup-like recess in a portion of the pelvis. In the shoulder, the ball is on the proximal end of the humerus, but the socket is not nearly so simple.

The socket in the shoulder joint is the rotator cuff we've all heard about. The rotator cuff consists of portions of the scapula (shoulder blade), clavicle (collar bone), the SITS muscles (Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres Minor and Subscapularis muscles), tendons and ligaments. As you can see, this is a much more complex structure than the hip, and is much more prone to overuse injuries.

Traumatic injuries to the shoulder can be caused by falls, direct blows or even abnormal, extreme twisting or bending of the shoulder. These can be minor or severe, causing symptoms ranging from soreness to debilitating pain.

Often, chiropractic care, including gentle chiropractic manipulation and other conservative modalities available, will enable patients to resume their normal activities, pain free.
