Millions of Americans needlessly suffer daily from chronic, debilitating leg pain. Chiropractic care can provide many of these patients with the relief they need.

Leg pain often originates from problems with the lower back, such as sciatica. Sciatica is caused when a spinal nerve root in the lower back becomes compressed due to such things intervertebral disk degeneration. Traditional medical treatment for sciatica includes steroid injections, prescription medications such as opiates to control pain, or surgery. Chiropractic care offers a natural, drug-free alternative to those treatments.

A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine has shed new light on the importance of chiropractic care as a viable treatment option for back-related leg pain (BRLP).

The study focused on 192 adults with reported subacute or chronic BRLP lasting four or more weeks who were not currently receiving ongoing treatment for their condition. Researchers randomly assigned patients to two groups. One group received a combination of chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy and home exercise, while the second group received only instructions for simple home exercise, for a period of 12 weeks.

Those receiving chiropractic care as part of the study visited a chiropractor up to 20 times during the 12-week study for 10 to 20 minutes of spinal manipulation on each visit. They also received instructions for exercise and simple pain management techniques to help deal with their condition.

Patients in the home exercise group received only instructions and guidance on exercise and pain management to help relief their symptoms. They also met with a chiropractor, personal trainer or exercise therapist during the 12-week study for four one-hour sessions but did not receive spinal manipulation therapy.

Study participants in the group which received spinal manipulation therapy reported less back and leg pain after the 12 weeks of treatment, greater overall satisfaction with their care and condition, and were less likely to use pain medications to control their symptoms than those who only home exercise to treat their BRLP.

The results of this study are clear. Chiropractic care can provide lasting relief for chronic lower back and leg pain.
