Chronic cough can indicate several underlying problems such as asthma, respiratory tract infections, sinusitis, acid reflux, and tobacco use, for example—each of which irritates the throat. Chronic coughs can be wet—producing much mucous—or dry. Oftentimes, chronic coughs accompany runny noses, congestion, hoarseness, sore throat, heartburn, shortness of breath, or frequent throat clearing, for example.

A lingering chronic cough requires immediate medical care; however, if the problem isn’t rectified by “traditional” treatments such as over-the-counter cough and allergy medicine, asthma inhalers, or other general interventions, then the patient can get frustrated from lack of effective relief.

Chiropractic Care for Chronic Cough

Coughing is the body’s way of ridding itself of unwanted foreign bodies which render the body’s immune system compromised. Vertebrae subluxations—or minor spinal misalignments—can interfere with the proper functioning of nerves, thus resulting in a number of potential results including chronic cough.

Chronic cough and chiropractic go hand-in-hand in alleviating symptoms because spinal manipulation relieves the stress upon nerves and muscles, thus enabling the spinal cord and surrounding nerves to regain proper functioning. Chiropractic care not only alleviates chronic cough but also a host of other conditions.

Evidence

A recent case study in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research reported how chiropractic treatment significantly reduced the symptoms of a young, seven-year-old girl who had been suffering from asthma since she was four. She had been put on three different inhalers, up to 24 times per day, and she still suffered from a chronic cough and fever. She was also placed on an additional ten other medications to handle her symptoms—none of which did so completely.

After a chiropractic examination, she was diagnosed with vertebral subluxations and was scheduled for two-to-three adjustments per week. After her first chiropractic treatment, her symptoms reduced considerably. She did not cough that first night at all. After three weeks of treatment, she was no longer having asthma attacks and was able to increase her physical activity. The results were impressive.

Chiropractic care has been proven effective in alleviating countless medical conditions, including chronic cough. If you have a chronic cough and would like to see how chiropractic care can help you, or for more information, please contact us.
